Journeyperson Carpenter
Location: Vancouver, BC
Department: Construction
Reports To: Site Supervisor / Director of Construction
Who We Are
Smallworks is a recognized leader in the design and construction of innovative infill housing solutions in British Columbia. We specialize in small-scale multi-unit homes, with a mission to create sustainable, livable, and beautifully crafted spaces that respond to BC’s housing needs. As pioneers in laneway housing and beyond, our team values craftsmanship, efficiency, and community impact.
The Role
We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Journeyperson Carpenter to join our construction team. This role is well-suited for a professional with a strong background in residential construction who values quality, precision, and teamwork. As a Journeyman at Smallworks, you’ll play a key role in helping us deliver beautifully built homes that make a real impact in our communities. You will also contribute to the growth and development of our team by mentoring apprentices and labourers on-site — sharing your knowledge, setting a strong example, and helping to foster the next generation of skilled tradespeople.
Key Responsibilities:
General Duties
- Interpret blueprints, construction drawings, and specifications to guide work.
- Measure, cut, shape, and assemble wood, steel, and other construction materials.
- Install structural and non-structural components (e.g., walls, doors, stairs) accurately and efficiently.
- Ensure all work complies with the BC Building Code and other relevant regulations.
- Support Site Supervisors in keeping project schedules and deliveries.
- Maintain organized, clean, and safe work environments in accordance with WorkSafeBC and company standards.
- Communicate material needs, schedule updates, and site issues to supervisors and the construction coordinator in a timely manner.
Mentorship & Supervision
- Mentor and guide apprentices and labourers by modeling proper techniques, sharing trade knowledge, and helping them understand the “why” behind each task.
- Provide clear, respectful instructions and feedback that help less experienced team members improve their skills and confidence.
- Ensure apprentices are following safe work practices and using tools correctly, reinforcing Smallworks’ standards for quality and safety.
- Collaborate with supervisors and coordinator roles to track apprentice progress and identify training opportunities or additional responsibilities.
- Foster a positive and inclusive team environment where everyone feels encouraged to ask questions, contribute, and grow.
Quality & Safety
- Follow Smallworks' safety protocols and building best practices at all times.
- Participate in toolbox talks, safety meetings, and compliance checks.
- Identify and help resolve quality or safety concerns on-site proactively.
- Contribute to a culture of safety, respect, and professionalism.
Qualifications & Skills:
- Red Seal Journeyman Carpenter Certification (or equivalent experience and credentials).
- 5+ years of hands-on experience in residential construction.
- Strong understanding of BC Building Code and construction site procedures.
- Effective communication skills and a collaborative work style.
- Organized, reliable, and able to take initiative on-site.
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
What We Offer:
- Competitive wages based on experience and qualifications.
- Full-time, stable year-round work within the Vancouver area.
- Opportunity to work on custom, small-scale homes with a high level of care and craftsmanship.
- Tools and safety gear provided or subsidized.
- A tight-knit team that values sustainability, community, and smart building.
- Ongoing growth and leadership development opportunities.
